An Outreach Program of the Administration
February 17, 2006
Living up to being a “University with a Heart”, the University is making sure its students whose families Leyte will stay have a bright future.
Members of the Gullas family led by UV Executive Vice President, Jose “Dodong” Gullas signed a covenant scholarships to eight of fifteen students studying in Cebu City whose families suffered in the tragedy. These eight students are enrolled in UV. The University is committed to provide the free tuition and miscellaneous fees until they finish their respective degrees. They are enrolled in various programs such as nursing, nautical, architecture, engineering, marine engineering and care giving. The high school student also has the chance to pursue a nursing degree after graduation.
The university also initiated “Bunga sa Gugma”, a fund drive among university alumni that raised over Php 50,000.00 intended to sustain the personal allowance of eight students until they finish school. All donations will be publicly acknowledged.
The eight students, like the university scholars, will be provided with free lodging close to school where scholars are housed. Arrangements are now being made with the university alumni who occupy top positions in different establishments in the city for possible part-time jobs for the eight students.
Tragic is the incident on the 17th of February this year may have been, the support that the students received from the university may give them a new surge of hope that a bright future is still within their reach.
UV takes care of its own.
